Cyclists rewarded for sterling effort
Riders from the area who put in pedal power to raise thousands of pounds for charities were rewarded for their sporting efforts at a presentation evening.
Malton-based team Bionic, and the Pickering Peddlers, made up of staff members from Pickering medical practice, attended The 2012 Great Yorkshire Bike Ride Rider Awards ceremony, held at Headingley Stadium, in the executive suite, on November 11.
Group members took part with hundreds of other riders in the annual charity cycle ride from Wetherby to Filey, which attracts cyclists of all ages and abilities.
Managing the route through Yorkshire countryside, both groups successfully completed the 70-mile ride, now in its 29th year.
Team Bionic raised £2,406, and Pickering Peddlers raised £2,234 which will go towards support for charities including Ryedale Mencap and Martin House Children’s Hospice.
In total, 1,564 cyclists braved the bad weather for the bike ride on June 16, to raise a combined total of £136, 640.
In its 29 year duration, the event and its sponsors have helped to raise more than £2.2m for charity projects.
In addition to the local children’s hospice and Ryedale Mencap, money raised from this year’s sporting fundraiser, The 2012 Great Yorkshire Bike Ride, will also be used to support several other charities.
These are: Heart Research UK, Candlelighters Trust, Yorkshire Cancer Research, Epilepsy Research UK, Wetherby Lions, St John Ambulance, Jennyruth Workshops, Hollybank Trust and the Sadie Rose Clifford Appeal.
