Meeting to look at plan response

PLANS to develop Stanley Harrison House, next to Malton Train Station, will be looked at during a joint meeting of Malton and Norton’s town councils on Tuesday.

They will run the rule over the planning application from Ryedale District Council which wants to make the building suitable for public use.

Potential long term uses for the building are as a joint library for Malton and Norton and a base for Malton Tourist Information Centre.

It has also been mooted as a new home for Ryedale Voluntary Action and the Citizen’s Advice Bureau, both of which could be made homeless if a supermarket developer is given permission to knock down Ryedale Community House and build a store on Wentworth Street car park.

Speaking at Malton Town Council’s meeting on Wednesday last week, Cllr Jason Fitzgerald-Smith, the Mayor of Malton, said: “We need to take notice of public opinion when it’s something that’s going to affect both communities. We should be looked to have a joint review of this application.”

Cllr Paul Andrews argued that by moving the libraries, TIC and other organisations to Stanley Harrison House, the council would be “moving the centre of gravity away from the town centre.” Ryedale District Council will decide whether or not to grant planning permission.
