PICKERING is gearing up for the return of the popular Give or Take Day this Saturday.

The scheme, which is also a big hit in Kirkbymoorside and Malton, invites people to bring items they do not want to Pickering Memorial Hall so others who may need them can take them away for free.

“This is a way of recycling which benefits the environment and benefits local people,” said Susan Strange, one of the event organisers. “Many people in the area have items they no longer need or use, so it’s much better to pass these on for re-use rather than discard them.

‘‘And you might find something that you have always been looking for – for free!”

Items considered acceptable are household or kitchen items, books, CDs, clothes, electrical goods and furniture that can fit into a car.

Stickers are put on electrical goods and furniture to indicate they have not been checked for safety.

The Give or Take Day is organised by Pickering Civic Society and Ryedale Lions in partnership with Ryedale District Council. John Brown, the council’s environmental co-ordinator will be on hand during the day.

Any leftover items will be taken to a local charity shop.

The Give or Take Day runs from 9am to 1pm.
