Charity gets a slice of pub’s beer bread
JOHN Medd is using his loaf to make money for charity.
Several times a week he visits his local pub, The Sun Inn, Pickering, to take home the final few drops from each cask of real ale which he then uses to bake his own unique brand of bread.
His inspiration came from writer and broadcaster Sue Nowak, a Campaign for Real Ale stalwart, who penned a story about how yeast sediment from real ale can be used for making loaves. And upon learning about John’s handiwork, she jumped at the chance to join him, the pub’s owners, staff and customers for a Bread, Cheese and Beer evening recently.
“This is such a lovely pub,” she said. “It’s a breath of fresh air.”
And the bread can be classed as a true local delicacy - since it is made from ales which are brewed in Yorkshire.
That is down to The Sun Inn’s co-owner Martin Robertson who has only chosen beer from God’s Own County since taking charge of the pub in April last year.
He said: “I could bring in beers from other parts of the country but there’s so many fabulous beers brewed in Yorkshire, that it will be a long time until I exhaust them all!”
