Access to library increased

PEOPLE in the Malton area will have increased access to both their tourist information centre and library after an effective solution was found for both services to flourish while still making essential savings.

The county council has teamed up with Ryedale District Council to relocate its award-winning Tourist Information Centre from Malton Museum into Malton Library and the current library opening hours will increase from 40 to 46 hours.

The move follows a decision by the county to retain its library service but seek other ways to run parts of it because of Goevrnment cutbacks in funding.

Cllr Linda Cowling said: “This is a natural partnership between two services dedicated to high standards of information provision.

“While both the library service and the Tourist Information Centre will continue to have their own special fields of operation there are many areas where their skills and services overlap and the staff look forward to working together to offer an even more comprehensive public provision.

“Through this initiative the Tourist Information Centre is able to offer a six-day-a-week opening to support residents, visitors, local business and the tourism economy and this arrangement also enables the library to stay open for longer.”

Malton TIC will be open Monday to Friday, 9.30am-5pm and Saturday, 9.30am-4pm.
