WORD is getting around about a group of friends leading a rap revolution in South Tyneside.

David Adams, 29, of Low Simonside, and Scott Chapman and Jack Johnson, both 23 and from Westoe, have been running the Get Slated Rap Battle League since last July.

Now a Good Friday is guaranteed for their sixth event at Hedworth Hall in Dean Road, South Shields, next week.

The show takes place from 5.30pm, with the first battle taking place at 6pm.

The rap battles, which see rivals compete on stage in a bout of verbal sparring, have proved a huge success, with capacity crowds at the Hedworth Hall and the Waterfront pubs, both in South Shields.

Everyone from masters of the mic to newcomers are welcome to join in the fun.

The pioneering pals have also bolstered their following with their own Facebook page, while videos uploaded on Youtube have received more than 40,000 hits.

Mr Adams (known in rap circles as Adamzy) is a seasoned rap battler who decided to start up his own league in South Tyneside, with Mr Chapman (Chappaz) and Mr Johnson (Big Jack) soon getting onboard to turn a dream into reality.

Both Mr Chapman and Mr Johnson will be taking part in rap battles on the evening – and they’re keen for some home support to spur them to success.

Mr Adams said: “What sets us apart is we are able to get the best rap battle performers from all over the country involved and many even contact us because they’ve heard great things about the league and want to be involved.”

Mr Chapman added: “Rap battles are different to a normal music performance, as there is that element of competition between the rappers.

“It really gets your adreneline going, which helps you perform well.”

Mr Johnson said: “We’ve all been rap fans for years but there was nothing up here in the North East.

“Now we’ve had more than 40,000 views on Youtube and have nearly 500 likes on Facebook.

“Anyone who likes our page is then sent notifications to keep them up to date with news and upcoming events. We’ve got people from all over the country taking part, it’s looking like our best show yet.”

Tickets for the latest rap battle can be purchased for £5 in advance either by asking at the bar at the Hedworth Hall or by sending a message to www.facebook.com/GetSlatedRapBattles.
