IT’S a right carry on at Woodend Creative, where members of Scarborough Musical Theatre Company are rehearsing their new show, ready for a duo of performances in Pickering in November.

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is a musical farce set in Ancient Rome with soldiers, courtesans, eunuchs, slaves and soothsayers all over the place.

The 1962 Broadway hit, recently revived at the National Theatre, was a West End hit for Frankie Howerd leading to the famous BBC TV spin-off Up Pompeii.

As the fast-talking slave Pseudolus, Scarborough teacher Matt Stradling steps into the shoes of Frankie Howerd, Phil Silvers, Nathan Lane and Whoopi Goldberg.

The company has struck out into new territory with Forum.

The scheduled performances of the Stephen Sondheim musical at the Kirk Theatre will mark their first ever touring production.

“The show has all the zany, pantomime feel of a Carry On film,” said director Tim Tubbs.

“It’s easily the most accessible of Sondheim’s musicals, packed with catchy songs, funny gags, stock characters, crazy situations, hilarious misunderstandings, and plenty of cheeky innuendo.

“The perfect family show, in fact. We’re having a great time with it. ”

Following a three-night run at Scarborough at the start of next month, the production comes to the Kirk Theatre in Pickering, on Monday November 5 and Tuesday 6 at 7.30pm.

Playing alongside Matt Stradling are Stu Large, Marion Terry or Katie Buttner, Jeannette DuPont, Paul Buttner, Julian Law, Jack Seals-Law, Pauline Newman.
