New home beckons for allotment holders

A GROUP of allotment holders in Malton will soon be moving to a new home.

Malton Town Council is due to sign an agreement with a landowner which will bring an end to the allotment site on Outgang Lane by January 31, 2014.

The land is needed by the Archbishop Holgate Trust as part of its plans to build a major housing development. But to ease the concerns of allotment holders, the trust has bought a new site on Crabtree Lane. Negotiations have been running for several months.

The trust has agreed to give the allotment association £20,000 to pay for the move and development of their new home, to include fencing, a spine road, lock-up gate, water source and rabbit proofing.

“There is a sadness and dissatisfaction with having to move some of the long standing allotments, gardens and buildings,” Malton Town Clerk Mike Skehan said last week. “There are one or two not very happy with it. Having said that, generally there’s an acceptance that this has to happen. They appreciate the Archbishop Holgate Trust did not need to make any offer for this so there is no reason why we shouldn’t go ahead with this offer - it’s clear we have to vacate.”
