A SPECIAL concert in aid of the Haiti earthquake victims is expected to pack out Pickering's Methodist Church tonight (Friday)
It is the first appearance of the spring season for the 30-strong Malton District Male Voice Choir, who will be joined by The Garrowby Benefice 12 ladies' choir and local soloists, including male voice choir conductor Chris Thornton-Holmes, who sings with the Royal Opera Covent Garden, tenor David Ackroyd and monologue performer Roger Coupland.

Chris said: "It is an honour to sing for such a good cause. We hope local people will support this concert and that between us we can do something, however small, to help the people of Haiti."

The concert marks the third full year for the increasingly popular male voice choir which has helped raise thousands of pounds for charity. It has just emerged from a stark winter where members got stuck in a blizzard while singing at a Burythorpe wedding reception and weather forced the cancellation of a concert in Norton.

Future concerts include an appearance at Sinnington Methodist Church on March 23 and at St Michael's Church, Great Edstone, on Saturday, May 22. A joint appearance with Malton's Harmonia Ladies Choir is also planned, along with a concert at the Salvation Army Citadel in Norton.

Anyone interested in joining the choir should call secretary David Ackroyd on (01944) 758693 or (01653) 600521. Previous singing experience is not necessary.
