THE Bishop of Middlesbrough was the guest of honour as a Pickering primary school unveiled its new £500,000 extension.
The Rt Rev Terence Patrick Drainey, whose diocese covers Ryedale, officially opened the new development at St Joseph's Primary School on Thursday.
A balloon release, song performances and lunch continued the celebrations followed by netball and football games.
The extension, which almost doubles the size of the school, includes two class rooms, an increase in the size of the school hall, a prayer room and a new library area.
Headteacher Kevin Macklan said: "It's made a big difference – even in this early stage – to the space and general feel of the school."
Funding came from the Diocese of Middlesbrough and North Yorkshire County Council, among others, and a fundraising drive by the Friends of St Joseph's School.
"I would like to say a big thank you to the Friends and governors and to everyone associated with the school and to the pupils for being so fantastic on the day," said Mr Macklan.
