SCARBOROUGH MP and Terrington farmer Robert Goodwill is well-known as a traction engine enthusiast and owner and when he visited the show on Sunday he was clearly impressed with the record entry in the vintage tractor, engine and farming machinery classes.
What particularly caught his eye was a scaled-down Dodman traction engine built by Mark Andrus, who lives in Scampston.
Mark, who is a tool-maker with Ellis Patents in Rillington, finished the engine in 2003 after a two year labour of love which involved working to limited scale drawings of the original.
Robert has a full-sized Fowler single cylinder traction engine which he has shown at Malton Show in recent years and Pickering Steam and Traction Engine Rally.
Heavy rain in over the last few days persuaded him not to show it at Malton this year – “Because I didn’t want to get it bogged down and have it hauled out.”
But he does plan to take it to a charity event for St Catherine’s Hospice at Mill Lane, Cayton Bay next weekend and to the annual Pickering steam rally the weekend after.
