SCAMPSTON Park provided the stage for the 117th Malton Show on Thursday.
There were more than 120 trade stands and traditional features included sheepdog trials, police and fire service displays, shire horse turnouts, terrier racing, a dog show, children's classes, a parade of the Middleton Hounds, an owl display and competitions in horticulture, fur and feather and cooking and craft.

East Yorkshire Vintage Tractor and Engine Club also returned to the event after being additional entertainment to replace the livestock classes at last year's show which were still recovering from the foot and mouth crisis.

It was so popular it was asked back by the show council, which also set up a craft tent this year.

Show chairman Ian Hamilton has been in the role since 2000.

A retired beef and arable farmer from Marishes, he said: "I was very pleased to see the livestock back and I'm sure everybody else would have been too because it's an agricultural show and it's simply not the same without it.

"We do realise the numbers were down in those classes but hopefully we can build on that for next year.

"Unfortunately we lost a few to the weather as some farmers would have stayed out to harvest.

"No-one could have faulted the weather. It was a beautiful day. I think it went very well and the attendance was up.

"We usually think about 12,000 will come, and although we haven't counted up all the gate numbers it will be up from that.

"Next year won't be a lot different, but every year you try and keep things fresh.

"The trade stands were very good and they all looked very well presented. I had quite few nice comments during the day and I think everybody had a good time."
