WEIRD and wonderful scarecrows were on display when a village held its spring festival over the holiday weekend.
Slingsby, near Malton, decided to have a weekend of May Day celebrations with scarecrows appearing in gardens and some more unusual places. Some were suspended in the air or placed against walls and hedges.

The Slingsby Trail event was organised by the village school and ended on Monday with celebrations on the village green including maypole dancing displays by children – a tradition first recorded in the village in 1845 and which has been held uninterrupted for the last 30 years.

Organisers had also arranged a car boot sale, garland dancers, music by the Swinton Brass Band, a tombola, raffles, games and stalls. There was also a display of memorabilia in the village’s All Saints Church.

Children had also been hard at work making scarecrows for the annual competition held at Ryedale Folk Museum at Hutton-le Hole on the edge of the North York Moors.

This year the theme was Heroes and Legends and entries are on display for the whole of this week after being judged on Monday
