A NEW £60,000 scheme being piloted across Ryedale will help hard-up families pay for out-of-school activities.
Entitled Me Too, it is offering vouchers of up to £10 which can be spent or activities, sports club memberships or subscriptions to groups such as the cubs or brownies, thanks to the Funding from the Department for Children, Schools and Families.

Families are also being encouraged to check whether they are eligible for free school meals as it automatically entitles youngsters to receive Me Too vouchers.

The scheme is being launched at Norton College on Monday where members of the county council's extended schools team in Ryedale are inviting families and young people aged eight and older to come to try sports such as Rock-it-Ball, tag rugby and martial arts as well as family drumming sessions, drama and "fun team tasks".

Cllr Howard Keal, said: "It is very welcome that such a brilliant scheme is being piloted for the whole of Ryedale. I hope there is a great response from young people and parents to the launch of Me Too and the taster of the fantastic variety of activities on offer – I'm looking forward to the street dance!

"The project provides an opportunity for young people to take part in a wide range of things to do which might otherwise be difficult to afford. There is also the bonus of possibly qualifying for meals free at school which can be a big help to the family budget.

"I had free meals at school and I know it helped my mum."

Activities which children can spend the vouchers on include horse riding, swimming, gymnastics, rugby and football, performing arts and any events at local leisure centres.

Kate Asquith, a member of the extended schools team, said: "They tell us what they'd like to do and we contact the providers to get them signed up. Ryedale clubs and attractions have been fantastic in their support of the scheme. The funding goes national next April so it gives young people the opportunity to develop skills and interests over a longer period – it really is a great scheme – make sure your children are not missing out."

To book activities on Monday, contact Taylor Scaife on 07787 490040. The launch runs from 10am-3pm.
