NORTON'S household waste recycling centre will close on June 11 – despite a bid by the town's mayor and county councillor to keep it open.
Cllr David Lloyd-Williams called on North Yorkshire County Council to overturn the decision until a full publication consultation has been carried out, but the demand has been rejected.

Cllr Clare Wood, the county council's executive member for wa
ste management and recycling, has insisted all the correct procedures were followed and the decision cannot be reversed.

The council is closing the site in North Road in favour of improvements to the Malton recycling centre in Showfield Lane. The £80,000 scheme is under way and due for completion on June 6.

The authority said the two sites were too small to offer the full range of services, with Norton recycling and composting only 47 per cent of household waste delivered to it, compared with an average 60 per cent.

Improvements to the site in Showfield Lane mean it can offer a full range of recycling services, including plastic bottles which Norton is currently unable to accept.

It will be renamed Malton and Norton Household Waste Rycycling Centre and the council says the combined operation will deliver savings of £80,000 a year and increase recycling levels.

The extended site will have improved traffic management, making it easier and quicker for residents to dispose of their waste. The site is expected to recycle and compost at least 60 per cent of household waste delivered to it.

l Time is running out for anyone wanting to use commercial-like vehicles to take waste to North Yorkshire's household waste recycling centres.

Residents wishing to use vans, signwritten vehicles or large vehicles are being urged to register with the county council before June 1 because anyone using a commercial or similar vehicle after this date without a proof of registration will be turned away.

The county council has also introduced guidance on waste from charities and on construction and demolition waste from commercial customers.

Further details on the new guidance can be obtained from the county council website at www.northyorks.gov.uk/hwrc, the Customer Service Centre on 0845 8727374 or waste.management@northyorks.gov.uk

Leaflets are also available from the household waste recycling centres.
