A CHARITY worker has raised £3,500 following a 1,000-mile cycle ride to south-west France to raise awareness of his missionary work in Africa.
Although Dr Chris Lawton did not specifically ask for sponsorship the money has flowed in since plans for his journey were reported in the Malton & Pickering Mercury.
Dr Lawton, who lives in Pickering, cycled 1,509 km from his home town to Peytavy in the Tarn area of France where he and his wife Vivienne have a holiday home.
The aim was to raise awareness of the African Revival Ministries, ARM-Senegal, of which he and and his wife have been trustees since its foundation 15 years ago.
His cycle ride was spread over 15 days
"What I did not expect was the generous response of so many people, including many who read about my journey in the Mercury, as a result of which over £3,500 has been raised to help our projects in Senegal," he said.
"If any church, society or group would like me to speak about my journey and our work in Senegal, please contact me on arm-s@cjlawton.co.uk"
Over the years the charity has built a church, a clinic, two classrooms and a football pitch with showers, clothes washing facilities and a kitchen.
Projects are being led and managed by local people.
During his ride Dr Lawton stayed with families and churches to help spread the word about the charity.
He said: "I wanted to do something different and tangible from my normal activities as well as raise awareness of ARM-Senegal."
