TRIBUTES have been paid following the death of lifelong bandsman Edwin Carter.
Mr Carter, 78, a leading player and conductor with Malton White Star and Swinton Excelsior Brass Bands, died in Scarborough Hospital after a short illness.
St Mary's Priory at Old Malton was packed for his funeral conducted by the Canon John Manc
hester last Friday.
The White Star Band, augmented by ex-members, together with members of Swinton Excelsior, the Salvation Army and Norton Youth Brass Bands, played as his coffin was led into the church and again when it was led out.
During the service the musicians performed one of Mr Carter's favourite pieces, Little Swedish Polka, which featured in many of his concerts,
On the route from the church to interment at Norton cemetery the hearse stopped for a time outside the White Star Bandroom on Old Maltongate.
Dorothy Ratcliffe, secretary of Swinton Excelsior Band, said: “Edwin was a lovely man who was well-loved by everyone who knew him. The service was perfect.”
Mr Carter taught many young musicians in the area and was a frequent performer with St Peter's Players amateur dramatic group from the 1940s and later the NOMADS group.
He leaves a wife Marie and children Elaine, Andrew and Phil.
