A SUPERMARKET manager was left feeling "shaken, intimidated and terrified" after a teenager threatened to stab her while she was at work, a court heard.
Daniel Bayes, 19, was jailed for 10 months and 28 days by Scarborough magistrates following the affray at Malton’s Netto supermarket on April 28.

He also admitted theft, criminal damage and failing to surrender to bail.

Dawn Birkett, prosecuti
ng, said Bayes, of Castlegate, Malton, was banned from the store and became aggressive when he was asked to leave.

He was said to be drunk and slurring his words and told the manager he would “smash her face in” and stab her when her back was turned.

When she took biscuits and chocolates from him that he was attempting to smuggle out of the supermarket he said: “This is my job. I will come here every day and carry on doing it.”

Bayes continued making threats and squared up to the manager, saying he would headbutt her.

Mrs Birkett said: “Members of staff witnessed it.

“The whole store came to a standstill.”

The manager’s son eventually came into the store and seemed to have defused the situation, as Bayes apologised and walked out.

But he soon returned and issued more threats before he was eventually escorted outside with the help of a male shopper.

Mrs Birkett added: “The manager said she felt shaken, intimidated and in tears.

“She was terrified he would come back.”

Nick Tubbs, in mitigation, said Bayes had mixed with the wrong crowd and hoped his time in custody would allow him to address his problems.

Bayes had previously received a six-month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months, for assault occasioning actual bodily harm, which was activated.

He was sentenced to a further four months for the affray and a total of 28 days for other offences, to be served consecutively.

PC Terry Triffit, of Malton Police, said: “This is good news for the local people of Malton and Norton.

“As the list of offences shows, this man has very little regard for the safety of people.”
