IT was the best of times for the hundreds of people who descended on Malton for its first Victorian Weekend.
Mingling with volunteers in period costumes, they turned out in force to be entertained and educated by a packed programme of themed activities on Saturday and Sunday.
From horse-drawn carriage rides and a Christmas pudding eating competition through to a Victorian-style funfair and markets selling top quality local produce, there was something for all ages to enjoy.
In a rare treat, fans of Charles Dickens had the chance to visit The Counting House on Chancery Lane which helped to inspire him when he wrote A Christmas Carol.
Dickensian readings came from Brian Oxberry on Sunday alongside information about the link between the author and Malton.
People wanting a special memento of the event could visit the Kirkbymoorside & District Camera Club in Malton Museum to have a snap taken in front of a Victorian backdrop while sporting authentic costumes.
Organised by Malton and Norton Business in Action, the Victorian Weekend was the latest in a long line of events which have been introduced to attract visitors and boost trade in the market town this year.
Hopes are high among members that they can increase the number of people who come to the town in future years and Malton Tourist Information Centre reported a threefold increase in the number of inquiries on Saturday.
Denys Townsend, chairman of Business in Action, said: ''It is nice to see something new that we have tried turn out so well.
''I am sure we will do it again next year and based on the lessons learned this year, we will be bigger and better.
''It is just good to have so many things going on throughout the day so that, hopefully, people will come and spend a few hours visiting the local independent shops around town as well as the market and the attractions."
Councillor Di Keal, the chairman of Ryedale District Council, said: ''It has given people something to smile about and enjoy while at the same time providing a boost for local traders.
''It's great to see people throwing their heart and soul into it to make something happen in the town and that's of benefit to everyone.
''We hope this is the start of many more Malton and Norton Victorian Weekends to come.''
