PARISHIONERS in Wharram-le-Street are launching a fundraising drive to repair their 950-year-old church.
They need to find as much as £15,000 to fix the roof of St Mary’s Church after English Heritage awarded £50,000 towards their cause. For the first fundraising event at the end of June, villagers in Wharram-le-Street and Duggleby will hold an Open Gardens weekend with stalls, vintage cars and cream teas.

Church warden Richard Hazlerigg said: “The village shop, post office and the pub have all gone. This is the one remaining site that is left for the community. You are looking at a community focal point rather than a church.”

St Mary's Church is one of five churches in the Wolds Valley and serves the villages of Wharram-le-Street and Duggleby.
