Business club aims to make town thrive

THE Railway at War weekend is just one of the topics that will be on the table at the next meeting of Pickering Business Group.

Organisers are inviting all the town’s business owners and managers to join them at Bar 4, Market Place, Pickering, on Tuesday, March 12, at 6pm.

The business group is Pickering Town Council’s first point of contact with traders and has a vital part to play in the future of the town.

Alongside the Railway at War, the agenda will also look at the level of interest that businesses have in the CCTV network in Pickering.

Cllr William Oxley, the Mayor of Pickering, said: “The Business Group is particularly important in these difficult economic circumstances when we all have to work together to promote the town and ensure businesses thrive.

“We are all aware that shop premises are standing empty for longer and that other retail businesses are not having it easy.”

Business Group meetings at the end of last year were well attended and there was a sense of community that the Group is keen to rekindle, said Cllr Oxley.

He added: “We are keen for all businesses to get involved not just retailers, in fact it is important that those on the industrial estates and the many accommodation providers are part of this.

“The aim is to focus on issues that will improve the town and encourage residents and visitors to spend more time here. Groups like this are having a significant impact in Malton and Helmsley, admittedly with the support of estate money and resource, but we must not allow Pickering to fall behind.”

As well as the formal discussions of the Business Group, members say it is an excellent way for owners and managers to meet and share ideas.

A Breakfast Business Group was also recently launched where the focus is more on the issues of individual businesses rather than the wider context.

Cllr Oxley said: “I have a sense of now or never, we have to make a concerted now there is no room for complacency and delay.”

All businesses are invited, he added, and if you are worried about coming on your own the easy answer is to bring a friend.
