A NEW year means a new start for several businesses which are hoping to make a mark in a Ryedale town.

Several new lettings have been completed by the Fitzwilliam (Malton) Estate in a move described as “encouraging” for the town and the district.

Conceived as a place where customers can “dine, relax and socialise in comfort,” Rory’s Bar is already proving popular with both locals and visitors since it opened in the Market Place in December.

From February, owner Rory Queen and his partner Jackie will begin to offer food and then open a family-run ice cream parlour at the next door property in the spring.

Meanwhile, Clarks of Malton, the family clothes and shoe shop, which has been in business for more than 20 years, will soon be under new ownership. Jane and Roger Bradley intend to retire with Jane Schofield taking on the lease of the property and ownership of the business.

Tobias Burckhardt, surveyor at the Fitzwilliam Estate, said: “One of the many great things about Malton is the abundance of family-run businesses. We are delighted that, despite Mr and Mrs Bradley’s retirement, Clarks of Malton will continue to trade in Malton.

Adding to the good news is Rachel Sawyer.

The owner of Tots2Teens took out a short-term lease on a property on Finkle Street in September and, after a successful few months, has decided to extend the agreement with her landlord.

“I started by trading at the Saturday Market in Malton then made the decision to lease premises from the Fitzwilliam Estate on a short term basis,” she said. “I am now delighted that due to the tremendous enthusiasm and support for my business that Tots2Teens can become a permanent presence in the town.”

Roddy Bushell, Estate Manager at Fitzwilliam Estate, added: “This time of year can be tough for traders in small towns, but in Malton we have this evidence of confidence in Malton from people interested in starting new businesses. It is very encouraging for the town and we are pleased to be able to assist in them in achieving their ambition.”
