Jobs boost for local business
AROUND 200 new jobs could be created thanks to a new partnership between a Ryedale business and a car manufacturer.
Rosti McKechnie Ltd, which is based in Pickering, is embarking on a long-term strategic agreement with a major automotive partner to support them in the development of key components for several new vehicle models up to 2017 and beyond.
The company estimates that 200 new jobs will be created during this period at its Pickering site on Westgate Carr Road.
The plant currently employs more than 400 team members in a vast array of technical disciplines, including injection moulding, automation, painting, general manufacturing and assembly.
To accommodate this growth, Rosti McKechnie will need to invest in new machinery and processes along with building a new storage and logistics facility on the current site.
In order to meet the customers launch schedule, this work will need to commence during early 2013 with preparations to begin recruiting additional staff for 2014 starting later this year.
John Woodhead, Plant Director at Pickering, said: “This is fantastic news for the company.
“The investment planned can only be positive for the loyal workforce we have whilst creating further opportunities in the area.
“The local community has been very supportive of our business over the years and that support will again be vital as we embark on this latest development.”
The news has been welcomed by Julian Rudd, Head of Economy and Infrastructure at Ryedale District Council.
“The staff at Rosti McKechnie have shown the ability of Ryedale companies to compete on the world stage and come out on top,” he said. “This is another excellent result for the Ryedale economy, on top of the recent announcement of 800 new jobs at the Food and Research Agency site at Sand Hutton.
“The economy team at the district council will continue to work with Rosti McKechnie and other companies to help overcome obstacles to investment in Ryedale.”
Since 1969, McKechnie Plastic Components has successfully traded from the Westgate Carr Road facility in Pickering, in partnership with customers like Jaguar Land Rover, Ford, Plastic Omnium and Hewlett Packard.
In the last four years sales have expanded by over 35 per cent and, in 2012, the company was purchased by the Swedish headquartered Rosti group.
In addition to the Pickering facility and its sister plant at Stamford Bridge, near York, Rosti have hi tech injection moulding operations in seven countries around the world and has an annual turnover in excess of 320m Euros.
The Rosti group has many partner customers in the Automotive, Consumer and Professional Appliance, Packaging, Business Machines and Medical Markets.
A public exhibition is now set to take place at Pickering Memorial Hall on Saturday, March 16, from 2.30pm until 6.00pm, to explain the proposed changes at the Westgate Carr Road site, including the new storage building that will be the subject of a forthcoming planning application.
People will be able to give their comments and discuss how to apply for forthcoming new jobs at Rosti McKechnie.
