A LADY Lumley’s pupil has received a prize from celebrity chef James Martin after winning a competition to create a tasty dish.

Nathan Bates was named regional winner of the Make it with Mince challenge 2012 - beating hundreds of other youngsters to take the top spot.

He wowed Mr Martin, the former Malton School pupil and competition judge, with his Mince Pie with Roasted Potatoes, Parsnips and Carrots, earning points for originality, nutritional value and presentation.

He won a touch screen media player, chef’s whites as well as £200 kitchen equipment vouchers for his school.

Now Nathan will go head-to-head with five other regional winners in the race to be crowned overall National Champion in the competition organised by Red Tractor.

Speaking of Nathan’s achievement, Mr Martin said: “Our finalists have been outstanding this year and Nathan has done exceptionally well to be named regional winner.

“His recipe was creative, nutritious and brilliantly presented.

“Most importantly it tasted fantastic!

“I hope that Nathan’s success will encourage more young people from the local area to get cooking and try out new and different recipes.”
