Firefighters will descend on two mystery locations in Ryedale this month as part of an ongoing campaign to encourage motorists to wear seat belts and refrain from using their mobile phones while driving.

They will compile statistics on how many motorists and passengers are spotted flouting the law.

The information will then be passed on to North Yorkshire Police and a decision made as to whether enforcement work should be carried out at the chosen areas.

It is part of an ongoing drive by the local road safety task group to educate drivers and passengers as to the dangers of driving without a seat belt and using a mobile phone while behind the wheel.

During the past three months, the fire service has also carried out speed checks in Slingsby; Old Malton; Eastgate, Helmsley; and Horsemarket Road, Malton; as well as two motorcycle safety campaign days in Helmsley.
