A64 danger zones revealed by council

NEW figures have revealed that the Barton Hill junction of the A64 is one of the worst stretches of roads for injuries and fatalities in North Yorkshire.

It is one of the seven Ryedale hotspots identified by North Yorkshire County Council which have direct or indirect links to the road.

And the revelations have once again led to calls for something to be done to tackle the problems on the A64, a road described as “very frightening” by one county councillor.

The figures look at the number of traffic collisions, injuries and fatalities in rural and urban areas during a three year period from 2008 to 2010.

Highways chiefs have since been able to piece together which areas, within a radius of up to 100 metres, have endured most of the problems.

The Barton Hill junction at Barton-le-Willows was ranked 13th out of the 210 hotspots in the county. During the three years, there were four collisions with one fatality, four people seriously injured and six slight injuries.

Speaking at the Ryedale Area Committee, county councillor Clare Wood, whose ward falls within the area, said: “Anyone who uses the A64 knows its a very frightening road, all junctions on the A64 are appallingly managed.”

Next on the league table is the junction which meets at Beverley Gate on the B1249 and Staxton Hill on the A64. Ranked the 31st worst location in the county, it had five collisions between 2008 and 2010 with two fatalities, two serious injuries and seven slight injuries.

Highways officers are now investigating the stretch of road to include part of the B1249 which is 500 metres south of the A64 at Staxton, which ranked 48th in the table.

Other A64 hotspots include Whitwell-on-the-Hill, the A169 & A64 roundabout at the north end of Malton; Scampston Bridge, Rillington; the Knapton Wold junction at West Knapton and the junction in Sherburn where the High Street meets St Hilda Street.

All of the problem sites identified are either under investigation or preparing to have work done to improve their safety records.
