Awareness rallying call for Fairtrade Fortnight

FAIRTRADE Fortnight returns to Ryedale next week.

Members, groups and businesses across the district are all gearing up to promote Fairtrade goods during the national campaign.

Events are being planned by groups in Malton and Norton, Pickering and Kirkbymoorside with schools and churches across Ryedale also aiming to get the message across to people about the importance of Fairtrade to people in Third World countries.

This year is also a time of celebration for the Malton and Norton Fairtrade Group, which has once again achieved Fairtrade status for the towns. Inspectors labelled the work of its members as “outstanding” in winning over new “hearts and minds” to the cause.

“The awareness of Fairtrade is growing," said member Alison Hardwick. She pointed to the Christmas shop which saw more than 2,300 of Fairtrade goods sold in two days.

But she added: “We have now got two years before we have to reapply for Fairtrade status so, in that time, we have got to press on and show that there has been a significant raising of awareness.”
