Best in Breed for Merrin's first Crufts visit
A MALTON man proved to be top dog on his first ever visit to Crufts after scooping a prestigious prize with his 20-month-old pointer Merrin.
John Evans, 52, beat off competition from hundreds to land the coveted Best in Breed before falling just short with a fourth place in the gundog category.
Nearly 23,000 dogs watched by 150,000 people packed into Birmingham’s NEC with the grand prize for Best in Show being won by a giant schnauzer named Philippe.
But a delighted John, who works for Yorkshire Water, was ecstatic with Merrin’s success at the Pedigree sponsored event.
He said: “This is my first ever Crufts and I never thought I would ever win an award – this really a dream come true.”
“Standing in front of all the cameras and people watching at home, I was definitely more nervous than Merrin.
“I have always been a fan of the breed. I love the versatility. They are good working dogs and show dogs.
“They also have a tremendous amount of affection to give. I never imagined I would do this well, I was just here for the experience.
“There are so many people at Crufts and the competition is so fierce but I really enjoyed it and will definitely be going back.”
Pedigree was once again proud to be the Principal Sponsor of Crufts.
