A Helmsley mum has taken the plunge by daring to bare all for a new fundraising calendar in support of Scarborough Hospital’s Snowdrop Appeal.

Annika Dowson – soon to be “Miss March” –posed with her friend Gill Armstrong for the “Calendar Girls” inspired shoot last week.

Their modesty was protected by strategically-placed balloons, hay bales and a spring lamb for what will become the centrepiece picture for March when the calendar is unveiled later this year.

It will also feature other models – male and female – who are disrobing in support of Scarborough Hospital’s £120,000 campaign for a maternity bereavement suite.

Annika and husband James have worked tirelessly for the appeal since it was launched last year.

They were inspired to act to honour the memory of their daughter Gypsy who was stillborn in October, 2008.

The calendar, said Annika, will feature a mixture of models, all of whom in some way, shape, or form have been affected by the loss of a child or cannot themselves have children.

The pictures will range from the poignant, through to reflective and the more positive, such as Annika’s effort.

“I wanted to be in a happy picture,” she said. “I am quite positive about how I feel about how we lost our daughter.

“People that are hopefully going to buy this calendar may not understand the loss of a child. We come out of it in different ways and we are trying to capture different people and how they feel.”

Annika and James, who now have a young son called Nathaniel, have raised £4,250 towards the appeal’s £120,000 target by taking part in the Tabular Hills Walk and the Lyke Wake Walk as well as organising a fair and a raffle.

Inspiration for the calendar came when Annika’s dad was given a Foxy Hunters calendar on Christmas Day.

Models have been recruited via Facebook Snowdrop Appeal page and the pictures are currently being snapped ahead of its launch in the Brunswick Centre, Scarborough, on Saturday July 19. Annika also hopes retail outlets in Ryedale will stock the calendar to help her raise money.
