Libraries in Ryedale are encouraging youngsters to be “amazed” this summer.

Children aged four to 11 are invited to take up the Summer Reading Challenge during the school holidays.

This year’s theme is Mythical Maze – based on myths and legends.

All children have to do is sign up and read six library books of their choice, collecting stickers and other rewards along the way.

Those who complete the challenge are presented with a certificate and a medal and participants this year will also get a discount voucher for Lightwater Valley. The Mythical Maze Challenge begins on Saturday and ends on September 6.

Experts say reading can “dip” during the long summer holidays, but the Reading Agency’s annual Summer Reading Challenge helps get three quarters of a million children into libraries to maintain their reading skills.

There are also a number of related activities taking place in this month and in August at local libraries, but book your tickets early as places are limited. For more information, see www.northyorks.gov.uk/mythicalmaze.
