Conservation award delight
THE Castle Howard Estate is the first winner of the Yorkshire Grey Partridge Group Trophy in recognition of its conservation work with the farmland bird.
The award, sponsored by Savills, was presented at the group’s meeting, which is organised by the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust and held at Askham Bryan College.
Receiving the award on behalf of estate owner Simon Howard, Wyne Bennett, head of the conservation and gamekeeping department on the estate near Malton, said: “I am chuffed to bits to be the first recipient of this magnificent trophy. It still thrills me after years of involvement with grey partridges to see a covey and that remains a strong motivator to support this iconic farmland bird.”
In the judges’ opinion the estate went that extra mile to help grey partridges by dedicating 1,000 acres of land to the creation of appropriate nesting, brood rearing and winter cover.
Group chairman Kenelm Storey said: “The vision and enthusiasm of Simon Howard has been converted into appropriate habitat provision, targeted predation control and supplementary feeding by his enthusiastic team of keepers headed by Wyne Bennett.”
Runner-up was Aldby Park Estate, at Buttercrambe, owned by George Winn-Darley.
The Trust is organising a partridge count and farmers who want to help should contact Neville Kingdon on (01425) 651066 or visit the website www.gct.org.uk/partridgecountscheme
