Continental delights prove a big success

MALTON'S first ever Contin-ental market proved to be a big success drawing in hundreds of shoppers to see the spectacle and sample a taste of Europe.

Brought to the town by Thrive, a local organisation aimed at boosting the fortunes of Malton and Norton, the collection of market stalls selling food and crafts, filled the area in front of St Michael’s Church for three days from Friday.

But it got off to a shaky start with complaints from some traders and motorists who were unaware that all but the top side of the Market Place was to be closed to traffic for the event.

Thrive spokesman Di Keal said: “We had intended that the area would be pedes- trianised so people could wander around without having to worry about being run over, but reluctantly we had to open the barriers to let traffic through.

“Having said that, the market has been fantastic. It’s been packed since it opened and I’ve never seen so many people in the Market Place on a Friday.”

Thrive chairman Stewart Frank was equally impressed with the support for the event.

He said: “It’s a really good thing for Malton and I’m sure it will have a positive knock-on effect for the whole town. This has got to be the way forward.”

The stallholders, who ranged from Bavarian wood carvers and Dutch doughnut sellers to Belgian confectioners and French bakers, were also pleased with the event.

Philippe Hautbois, who did a brisk trade selling cheeses, said: “It has been good and it’s a nice town to come to.”

Anne Williams, who lives in Norton, visited the market with her daughter, Stacey.

She said: “It’s very good and I like it. When something like this is on your doorstep, you’ve got to come.”

The Continental market is due to return in December.
