Crime falls by 9.2 per cent

Crime has fallen by 9.2 per cent in Ryedale in the past year, according to newly-
released figures from the district’s top police officer.

Inspector Andy Everitt, who took over as commander of Ryedale’s police force a year ago, revealed there has been 133
fewer offences during the 2012/13 financial year.

The only significant blip is a 30.5 per cent increase in “Burglary Other” – thefts from sheds,
agricultural outbuildings and churches.

Despite this increase, Ryedale comfortably remains one of the safest places to live in the country.

“We are doing very well but are by no means complacent,” said Insp Everitt. “There is
still much work to be done to ensure our district remains one of the safest, if not the safest,
in the country.” Burglary Other however, has seen an increase from 128 offences to 167 in the last 12 months.

The main culprits have been identified as criminal gangs who travel into Ryedale from surrounding counties and look to steal valuables such as power tools, metal, diesel, quad bikes and more.

Insp Everitt said North Yorkshire Police and other forces will continue to target “travelling criminals” as part of Operation Chairman and work alongside the National Farmers Union to increase membership of the Country Watch scheme, among other initiatives.

Insp Everitt said: “I want to develop easier reporting mechanisms for our farming community to report sightings of suspicious vehicles visiting premises or taking an interest in properties

“It is this sighting, however minor, that allows us to get on the front foot and deter criminals. If I have good intelligence on travelling criminals I will not hesitate in sending Ryedale officers up to Cleveland or Humberside and beyond to challenge them face-to-face and let them know that we will seek every opportunity to bring them to justice if they are committing crime in Ryedale. Common sense tells me that Ryedale will eventually hit a plateau in terms of it’s crime levels how-ever we are determined that this will not happen yet.”
