Malton and District Farmers Mart LLP say they are “disappointed” that their bid to run the livestock market was not successful. “We were pleased to have had the opportunity to submit a bid to the Fitzwilliam Estate to run the auction mart from October 5 and that it was warmly received,” said a statement from the company.
It was disappointed, but added: “Regrettably the challenge of the limited security of tenure restricted the way forward to enable the appropriate level of funding required to operate it. We did propose to the landlord that they should join us in a joint venture to continue the market on the present site in the short term.”
John Hicks, a founding member of the partnership, said: “Of course we are disappointed as well believe our proposal provided a great opportunity to develop both the existing and new market into a new vibrant and strong democratic organisation, involving the farming industry.
“We are grateful to all those who have encouraged and supported us in recent months and contributed to our efforts, especially in giving of their time.”
Fitzwilliam Estate has decided to make Malton and Ryedale Farmers Livestock Market Company their preferred operator for the project.
