The family of a missing Helmsley woman have thanked the public for their help and ask for their continued support in the ongoing search for her.

Barbara Colling, 68, has not been seen since Monday morning in the area of the B1257 at Abbotts Hagg, near the Rievaulx turn off.

Speaking about the support from the public and the police search, Barbara’s daughter, Lizzy Firmin, said: “The family has been overwhelmed by the lovely support we have had from neighbours and the whole community in Helmsley. It’s just incredible, thank you.

“We have also been greatly supported by the police and know they are doing everything they can to find mum.

“Although mum does suffer from dementia people would probably not realise this unless they spoke with her, even then it may not be obvious as she may seem articulate and confident.

“Even though she is only 5ft 2in tall, mum isn’t at all frail and will appear able to look after herself.”

Mrs Firmin added: “I know mum enjoys visiting churches and ask people to keep checking for her around these as well as outbuildings and sheds.”

Barbara is described as white, 5ft 2in tall, with a medium build and medium length blonde hair.

When she was last seen, she was wearing a navy blue jacket, black trousers, a blue hat with ear flaps and black knee length leather boots and is thought to have been carrying a black rucksack.

Following the results of the searches carried out by the specialist trail dog, officers will maintain their focus in the area where Barbara was last seen.

Police officers will be supported by search and rescue teams and an air support unit.

Inspector Andy Everitt, commander of Ryedale’s Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “Although the search for Barbara remains focused on the Newgate Woods area, I am asking anyone who sees a woman matching her description to contact the police straight away.”

Anyone who can help in the search for Barbara Colling is urged to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101, immediately, select option 1 and pass the information to the Force Control Room.
