A first-time author from Pickering has published a guide listing his favourite things to see and do in the Yorkshire Dales.

Up ‘ill ‘n’ Down Dale by Martin Gough, of Willowgate, features 130 pages crammed full with information and photographs about one of his favourite places to visit.

All profits from his labour of love will go to Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

Martin decided to write the self-published guide during a “social experiment” which saw him live without television for a year.

“I wouldn’t have written a book if I was sat in front of the TV – or it would’ve taken me 20 years to do it if I was watching Coronation Street!” he said.

The book sets out the Dales by region and covers most things visitors would want to know about the area.

Key sections include Martin’s favourite places, his 50 favourite pubs and campsites together with things to do in the Dales, interesting car journeys, useful websites and a list of Tourist Information Centres.

The informative guide, which comes in a handy A5 size to make it easy to carry, costs £7 and is available from The Yorkshire Dales National Park Centres, the 50 pubs listed in the guide and is available from the Yorkshire Air Ambulance website or at any events which it is taking part.

Copies can also be ordered for £7 plus post and packing by emailing Martin at martin.gough@hotmail.co.uk

Profits from the book will go towards the £9,990 its costs per day to keep both of the charity’s air ambulances up in the year, 365 days a year.
