The St Peter and St Paul Parish Church youth group have been hard at work helping with the preparations for The Wizard of Oz Flower Festival, which gets underway next month.

Organised and hosted by the church, the festival runs from May 23 until June 1, with a preview evening taking place on May 22.

Gail Radka, leader of the YOOF group, said: “Our 45 members have been painting props for the Emerald City and the yellow brick road, we have also been crocheting using yellow wool and crafting using ivy leaves.

“The church’s last flower festival in 2011 was the largest in the north east of England and attracted over 20,000 visitors.

“I would encourage people to come and visit us this year and bring their friends and family.

“We will have the rainbow cafe open each day for refreshments and are also running a scarecrow competition. Entries have to be in by May 19.”

The YOOF group meet on a Sunday evening at 19.00 – 20.30 during term time.

The festival’s preview evening is ticket-only, with tickets available from the church. For further information visit www.pickeringchurch.com
