A CLOSE knit family are coming together to celebrate a Golden Wedding Anniversary this week.

Tony and Janet Westwood, of Beverley Road, Norton, will be joined by their three sons and eight grand children as they mark 50 years of marriage with a meal at Ryedale Indoor Bowls Club – only a stone’s throw from their first fateful meeting all those years ago.

It was outside the old Buckrose pub on Commercial Street pub where Tony and Janet first clasped eyes on each other with Janet telling her friend afterwards: “I’m going to marry him.”

And so it was two years later when they marched down the aisle at St Peter’s Church, Norton, on January 26, 1963 – Janet’s 17th birthday.

Their wedding day, a small family affair, was held during the middle of one of the worst winters in living memory and as Tony began to suffer from Pleurisy, a condition that left him bed-ridden for eight weeks afterwards.

But the retired East Yorkshire County Council worker recovered and they soon had the first of their three children when Stephen, 49, was born, quickly followed by Nigel, 47, and Tony, 43.

Early married life was spent in Buckthorpe, Stamford Bridge and Bishop Wilton, in a house that had no electricity, no water and no toilet, before they moved to Janet’s hometown of Norton where they have lived for the past 43 years.

And their secret for a long-lasting marriage?

“I don’t think there is a secret,” said Janet. “If it works, it works.”

Tony added: “We work things out – any marriage needs a lot of hard work.”
