The planning committee of the North York Moors National Park has approved a retrospective scheme to site a refrigeration storage unit at Ryeburn Ice Cream, Helmsley – despite objections from nearby residents at Castle Court.

They had objected to the plan claiming it was out of place in the town’s conservation area and on the grounds of noise from delivery vehicles, and from the plant itself. But Richard Otterburn, of the company, said five generations of his family had worked at the farm for more than 100 years, and ice cream had been made on the site since 1989. The business, he said, was not expanding, but increasing its efficiency.
