Malton toddler crushed by TV as she watched CBeebies

A toddler was crushed to death when she pulled a television on top of herself while watching a children’s programme, an inquest heard.

The heavy, old-style set, which was on a stand, toppled onto two-year-old Lucy Lyle when she started playing with its handles and pulled out a drawer.

She died minutes later despite the desperate attempts of her mother, Catherine, to revive her.

Lucy and older sister Amina were in bed watching Barney on CBeebies when the incident happened at their cottage in Malton, North Yorkshire, on October 25, last year.

Mrs Lyle told the inquest, held at Scarborough Rugby Club yesterday, that she was watching television downstairs when she heard a loud bang. She added: “As soon as I heard it I ran upstairs and turned the light on.

“Amina was in bed, sitting up and looking around. The telly was on the floor and the TV unit had been knocked over.”

The two-drawer, two-cupboard unit, from Argos, usually took two people to lift it, she said.

Mrs Lyle added: “I noticed I could not see Lucy - and that’s when I started screaming.

“I ran into the room and saw blood on the telly. I lifted the TV off Lucy. She was on her back but her head was towards the set.”

A post-mortem examination showed the toddler died from a blunt head injury.

Coroner Michael Oakley recorded an accidental death verdict.
