A journey which has taken in Huddersfield, Wrexham and Norton has reached a welcome milestone for Ken and Jean Fisher – their diamond wedding anniversary.
The couple, who live on Langton Road, Norton, recently celebrated 60 years of marriage with a holiday followed by a small party with close friends.
Born and raised in neighbouring villages in Huddersfield, Ken and Jean met as teenagers but their blossoming romance was interrupted when Ken was conscripted into the RAF. It would not be until he was demobbed five years later that they would rekindle the relationship at the wedding of Jean’s cousin – celebrating their own nuptials at Lepton Parish Church in 1954.
They remained in Huddersfield until December 1979 when Ken, a keen golfer, became Secretary Manager of Wrexham Golf Club. It was here that Jean also developed a love for the game, holding the position of Ladies’ Captain.
Ken’s retirement in 1995 and a desire to return to Yorkshire led to them moving to Norton.
They soon settled into Ryedale life, becoming active members of Malton and Norton Golf Club, and made many new friends in the area.
And the secret of a happy marriage?
“You have to make sure you give more than you take,” said Ken, 84. “If you do that, I don’t think you will go far wrong. Everyone has their ups and downs, fall-outs and make-ups but there are ways and means of overcoming that.”
