Anne McIntosh, the MP for Thirsk, Malton and Filey, has paid tribute to Nelson Mandela who passed away last night.
Miss McIntosh, who is also chairman of the British South Africa All Party Parliamentary Group, said: “This truly is the passing of a great man. May he rest in peace. Nelson Mandela was a man of enormous courage and generosity of spirit and secured the peaceful transition from a period of apartheid and division to peaceful democracy and secured a vibrant future for the Republic of South Africa
“Mr Mandela changed the face of South Africa and was a very accomplished individual winning the Nobel Peace prize in 1993.
“Mr Mandela devoted his entire life to his country and worked tirelessly to ensure that apartheid ended in peaceful protest and was awarded the Presidency of South Africa in 1994. He never lost touch with his roots, always displayed great humility and has left a lasting legacy to his countrymen.
“Throughout the troubled years of South Africa, Mr Mandela was a beacon of hope and light guiding his fellow countrymen to end the apartheid through peaceful protest.”
