Members of a newly-formed branch of the Women’s Institute (W.I.) in Ryedale turned out in force to raise funds from their first stall in the Market Place, Malton, on Saturday.
It went so well that organisers at the Malton branch decided to extend the time scheduled to be there by an extra hour - and it resulted in £272 being raised on the day.
Sharon Caw, the branch president said: “I was amazed at how successful the day was.”
Since the branch was formed there had been an “astonishing amount” of interest shown and it had grown to 31 members but new ones are welcome. The branch meets at the parish community centre at St Leonard & St Mary’s RC Church on the fourth Thursday of each month.
“The stall was to promote the branch and the W.I and to raise funds so that we can have a successful future,” said Sharon.
The branch is planning a series of activities and will also be involved in the national centenary celebrations of the W.I next year.
“We work as a team to make things happen and as well as having a variety of skills we can build on the new friendships between us,”
