Project is bringing village up to speed

THE Rosedale area is in line for a further £130,000 of funding to as part of a programme to make high-speed broadband available to rural community networks.

The first project to benefit will be the ‘‘Rosedale extension’’, which will enable individuals and businesses in the area to access high speed broadband transmitted wirelessly from an existing scheme in Farndale.

The project is part of ‘Connecting North Yorkshire’ – an initiative led by North Yorkshire County Council to bring high quality broadband to rural communities across the county where it is not commercially attractive to the big telecommunications players.

The funding comes from Ryedale District Council and the Performance Reward Grant – money North Yorkshire County Council has received for exceeding targets set across public services.

Cllr Keith Knaggs said: “I am delighted, both as leader of the council and as a member of the Local Economic Partnership Board that we are able to contribute towards the roll-out of genuine high-speed broadband. It is fundamental to being a connected citizen, and business, in the 21st century”.

Anne McIntosh, MP for Thirsk and Malton said: “Bringing high-speed broadband to the remotest parts of the country is a priority for this Government and I am delighted that this latest expansion will see this vital service brought to those in Rosedale.

“High speed broadband will be extremely valuable to rural businesses including farms, holiday cottages and B&Bs who are all dependent on the internet to run their business. It will also be very welcome to the residents of Rosedale who will be able to access important public services.”

The internet service provider will be Moorsweb Limited – a community broadband project. The second phase of Connecting North Yorkshire, to bring high speed broadband to the market towns, is currently going through a procurement process and the successful contractor is expected to be appointed in June.
