The village of Thorpe
Bassett is to revive an
ancient rural tradition –Plough Sunday.

A special service is to be held at All Saints Church on Sunday March 23, at 3pm, says the Rector, the Rev Joe Kinsella, when a plough will be blessed.

“Traditionally the service was held to ask God’s blessing on the farming year to come, symbolised by a plough and a team of horses,” he said. “We thought it would be a good idea to have the service to recognise the work our farmers do to produce our food and keep our countryside in good order.”

Meanwhile, residents in the villages of Rillington, Scampston, Sherburn, Thorpe Bassett, West Heslerton, and Yedingham are being urged to mark the period of Lent by raising money for Water Aid.

Organiser Rex North, says the churches in the Buckrose Benefice raised more than £400 last year for the organisation.
