York & Ryedale Friends of the Earth have handed in a petition that demands North Yorkshire County Council says “no” to fracking in Ryedale.

Members descended on County Hall, Northallerton, to present the giant card which includes “postcard messages” to councillors on Friday.

Following the petition hand-in to the authority’s chairman Bernard Bateman, Josie Downs, of York & Ryedale Friends of the Earth, said: “While fracking produces more dirty fossil fuels that will cause more climate change, most people are concerned about its impact on the local environment, particularly the water supply.

“Fracking could also cause huge disruption in Ryedale so we want North Yorkshire county Council to oppose fracking and we need the Government to get behind renewables and energy saving instead.”
