Two sisters are putting on their running shoes for their two-year-old nephew as he battles a life-threatening brain tumour.

Jane Swallow, who owns Smash Boutique, Malton, and Cassie Meegan-Vickers are hoping to break through the £2,000 fundraising target for The Brain Tumour Charity when they set off on the Run or Dye 5k at Castle Howard on Saturday August 9.

They have named the fundraising effort, Fight with Milo, in honour of their nephew, who lives in Paris with their sister, Anya, his dad Pierre, and eight-year-old twin sisters, Ava and Romy.

Milo was recently diagnosed with Medulloblastoma and is currently undergoing a cutting-edge treatment for brain tumours in infants, as standard radiotherapy is considered too dangerous for a growing brain.

It has so far been carried out on only 150 patients, but has an 80 per cent survival rate.

Cassie, of Norton, said: “The types of treatments Milo will be given over the next six months are only possible due to the advancement of research and findings into this horrible and cruel disease. Some children don’t make it, and some don’t have further options. We’re just thankful that the specialists have a plan for Milo and that they aim to cure him. Though there are no guarantees, we will fight as hard as we can to save him.

“We are hoping he will not need any further brain surgery, but this is not yet known as it depends on how he reacts to the chemotherapy. He is going to be extremely poorly, more poorly than we can even begin to comprehend, but we know it is a necessary evil in order to give him a chance.”

Cassie added: “Milo is a little fighter, a determined, intelligent and joyful little boy full of life. We have always called him ‘The Hero’ since he was tiny, and now we also call him ‘The Warrior’. We will be with him all the way to help him fight through this, through the ups and the downs, the moments of joy and the moments of despair, with the ultimate goal of saving his life.”
