Special event for 'transition town' Kirkbymoorside

A RYEDALE town is celebrating its work in preparing for future climate change and dwindling fuel supplies at a special event later this month.

For the past four years, members of the Kirkbymoorside Environment Group have been organising events and raise awareness of energy concerns that could affect the local community in the future.

Through their work Kirkbymoor-side has now been hailed a "transition town" after proving they are planning ahead for a time without oil and coping with changing weather patterns.

To mark the milestone, the action group is organising a special event – Springboard Day – with children's activities, music, talks and information at the Memorial Hall on Saturday, April 25.

Environment group member Stephanie Sanderson said the group is preparing for future changes affecting transport, food supplies, energy, waste disposal and the local economy.

She said: "Kirkbymoorside is now officially a "transition town" but this is just the start of a long road ahead. We need to plan for a future when oil supplies are declining and climate change occurs. But we focus on action not words.

"Over the past year we have been working with the local primary school and the wider community to raise awareness of an issue which is critical for the future of the town."

She said the aim of the group is to encourage the town to eat locally sourced food and embrace sustainable transport.

Last October the group organised a town feast using food all grown in the area, a successful event which will be repeated in 2009.

"The aim of Springboard Day is to get as many local people as possible involved in the activities of the group," Stephanie added.

"It's not all doom and gloom and if we are prepared the affects of climate change will not be a disaster.

"We hope to get residents of all ages on board because we are all in this together."

Springboard Day will begin with a story-making session for children aged between seven and 11 years-old from 10am to 11.30am.

There will also be a planting session in the town's Millennium Garden and people are encouraged to bring along plants for the event.

Throughout the day there will be a photographic display, children's singing, talks and a performance by local indie band, The Koren Affair. From 7pm their will be enter- tainment from the Raindance Drummers, Jamside Up, David Swann and the Town's Traders' Grand Auction.
