The World Cup, Tour de France, Wimbledon and other sporting events will be celebrated with Malton and Norton’s Totally Locally Summer of Sport Fiver Fest.
Around 70 shops across both towns will be offering customers something special for £5 from now until Sunday July 13 – the day of the World Cup Final – as they aim to encourage people to support their local retailers.
The idea behind the scheme is to encourage people to support their local retailers and the local economy.
“Money spent local stays local,” said a spokesman for Totally Locally. “Imagine picking up a pork pie for your lunch. If you buy a local-made pie from a local shop, a big part of your money is passed on to the local pie maker.
“The shop employs a local accountant, a decorator, a window-cleaner.
“The pie maker who sources her meat from a local farm spends money with the farmer, the farmer spends money at the local garage, and so on.
“Around 80 per cent of each spend, at each step, goes into the local economy.”
Totally Locally is also encouraging shops in Malton and Norton to decorate their windows with a sporting theme – be it to celebrate the World Cup, the Malton Festival of Cycling, or even Malton Show.
If enough shops take part, then Totally Locally will ask a young sportsman or woman from the area to choose the winner.
