A company which started with just three people 18 years ago has progressed to become one of Yorkshire’s most profitable small and medium enterprises.

That Company Called If has made a name for itself – despite its unusual moniker – through its eye-catching products which are made at its base on Thornton Road Industrial Estate in Pickering.

Despite the ongoing recession, when consumers are increasingly forced to cut back, IF is continuing to grow and recently boasted a turnover of £7 million.

Having already filled three warehouses on the industrial estate in Pickering, the company recently opened a new design studio in York city centre and is in the middle of doubling the size of its design team.

Productivity, says managing director John Calvert, is scheduled to both increase and diversify to meet the demands of new sales opportunities in the USA and the worldwide export business.

“We are really four businesses in one: a designer of original products, manufacturer, wholesaler and exporter, but the key to our past success and future survival is the quality of our products,” he said.

Winner of the UK Gift of the Year Awards on several occasions, IF’s design-led gifts are intended to appeal to people who enjoy reading. Current product ranges include reading accessories such as book lights, reading rests, bookmarks, stationery items and optical equipment as well as card games and key-rings.

It also won a contract to supply souvenir bookmarks for the 2012 London Olympics.
